Now that the snowdrops have appeared and crocuses start to show their heads, it is a clear sign that Spring is on its way. The mornings may still have a chill in the air and we cannot be certain that the frosts are a thing of the past, but the sight of those little flowers appearing through the frozen earth makes us smile.

The Flower Garden

Winter and spring bedding plants need to be dead-headed to encourage a longer flowering period. Cut down faded foliage on herbaceous perennials before new growth starts and take out any weeds before they really take off in spring. Now is the time to divide and replant snowdrops and to plant lilies and lily of the valley crowns, as well as getting in gladioli, dahlias and other autumn flowering bulbs.

Preparation of the ground for spring planting can be carried out whenever the weather permits. Place a protective covering over soil in areas where you are going to plant or sow seeds. This will stop it from getting overly wet and warm the soil so that when you do plant they will get away quicker.

Trees, Shrubs and Roses

There is still time to plant bare root roses, trees and shrubs while they are still dormant. Don’t prune roses just yet as frosts can burn the new growth that will appear. Deadhead and prune grapevines, wisteria, buddleia and summer flowering clematis. Cut all previous seasons shoots back to within 2 or 3 buds of old wood. This hard pruning will encourage the development of strong growth that will bare good size flowers from June onwards. This is also good month for a dressing of bonemeal to shrub borders and beds. It takes a few weeks before it starts to break down in the soil, so it will be a ready source of plant food when the plants need it in a few weeks.

Kitchen Garden

Onion sets and seed potatoes should also be ordered now. Seed potatoes need to be kept in a cool, light environment while they are being “chitted”. If you encourage growth too early, energy will be wasted, and it is at least a month before the earliest potatoes can be put in the ground. Sow vegetable seed under cloches for early crops.

Cut back autumn fruiting raspberries to about 15cm of the ground and trim the tops of canes of summer fruiting raspberries.
